Holistic Editing Services by Jenah Maravilla

Mission

I believe in empowering our storytellers to radically show up in spaces we historically haven’t been a part of. By helping BIPOC writers detangle their ideas through tailored, intentional editing sessions, I bring my whole self into each session and connect past the content on the page. With each written piece, we delve deeper into the Why.I am dedicated to reminding my clients of their humanity throughout this shared experience and hope everyone learns more about themselves by the end of it.Maravilla means Wonderful, and I plan to uphold that.My longterm goal is to create a network of BIPOC editors with likeminded purpose that may better match other clients' lived experiences.

Writing workshops

These generative writing workshops require no previous experience and ask only full participation of the attendees. I take time to create an atmosphere that uplifts storytelling and rapport building, while grounding us in real-world concepts and guided meditation as we explore ourselves and one another. By the end of it, you will have a written piece to be proud of.

Edits FAQ

1. What kind of editing do you do?Check out my About or Services sections. Note: I will not write your work for you.
2. What does being a 'Holistic Editor' mean?I spend time in each interaction, (editing sessions, emails, or phone calls) placing self-care first. Reminders, journal prompts, and meditations are built into the process and tailored to you.
3. Do I have to be BIPOC to request your services? No, however, know that my preferred clients are BIPOC because academia does not prioritize their needs. I will provide a safe space for you regardless, but definitely try to refer me to a peer who will benefit from my services.
4. How do I contact you?Email anytime, Call/Text during work hours (CST). Email responses will be within 24hrs on weekdays or the next weekday after holidays / weekends. Ready to book a consultation? Click here.
5. How much ahead of time should I request your services? You are responsible for your own timeline. You can book the first consultation meeting as soon as you'd like. If you want multiple complete edits (of one project), know when in your process that you would need my input. Ex: Brainstorming? Stringing together the first draft? etc. For a large project (10+ pages), contact me between 1-2 weeks before the due date at the latest.
6. What are your rates?First consultation meeting (1hr) is free. I have a 3-tier payment system to keep equity in mind. Highest tier payment helps cover lower tier costs. So please, if you can, pay it forward! Estimates are also based on size of project: **Less than ** 1000 Words = per word. Greater than 1000 Words = per hour. 50% is due before I begin editing. Meetings after the first consultation are considered per hour if longer than 30mins. Per hour projects will be given a contract to sign.
7. What do I bring to a consultation?Depends on your objective. Are you meeting with me at the very beginning of your semester and seeing whether I can help you throughout? – You can bring your syllabus, any rubrics already handed to you. We can already hash out a tentative schedule. Is this one project or multiple? Is there just one thing you can't figure out? – You can screen-share your WIPs and dive into a quick soundboard session. Do you just want to speak to me and see if my services are for you? –Read on how to contact me (FAQ 4). Regardless, remember to bring yourself –honestly and openly.
8. What are Office Hours? These will occur once I have enough people asking for them. I plan to have a password-protected zoom call open for an hour or two once a month where I do a group guided meditation and (5 minute per question) AMA. This will also allow clients and potential clients to interact! I want it to be a space where we can help one another and it does not just have to be me speaking.
9. Can I donate to you?Yes please. A lot of unseen work goes into creating safe spaces and carving out my own profession. Just know I will be paying it forward as well. Venmo @JNH-M, PayPal PayPal.Me/JenahM, Cash App ** $J3NAHM**
10. Fun fact!Oranges and Broccoli do not exist in the wild. Oranges are hybrids of pomelo and mandarin, while broccoli was bred from wild cabbage. Source

Edit Samples

These are snippets of commentary from previous clients. I do not include many examples of baseline proofreads, finished arrangements, or deletions for privacy. Some samples are from narrative works, others are from STEM papers, and there is also final essay prompts to flesh out ideas better.
